When the fashion week models strut down the runway, they aren’t exactly wearing everyday clothing. Most of us would never wear anything even close it, but that doesn’t mean fashion is reserved for runway models. With just a few tips chosen specifically for our seniors, you can make this summer your most fashionable yet. These tips will go through the best summer trends from head to toe, and by the end, leave you feeling runway-ready.
Dresses
Sorry boys, but ladies first! Sundresses are always a favorite for ladies in the summer, and this year is no exception. Sundresses are a great way to beat the summer heat and cool off with some airflow, and they also happen to be really cute! This year, tiered dresses are especially popular. They come in all different colors, patterns, lengths, and materials. Any tiered dress seems to be in style, but the most popular kind this summer tends to be solid colors with a skirt that ends below the knee. This long, solid-colored dress helps you look taller and slimmer, and it’s especially great for our senior ladies who appreciate a little more sun protection. A tiered sundress is a great way to easily be fashionable with this season’s trends.
Timeless Tips
There are so many different, wonderful options of shirts and blouses that it would be cruel to only mention a select few options for ladies, so instead, let’s talk about some timeless trends. In general, white shirts are great for the summer. The light color is flattering and will help to keep you cool in the hot sun. Loose fitting or flowy tops are also very attractive and functional in the summer, especially when they can billow out in the summer breeze. Sleeveless tops are also an attractive summer look, but be careful to only wear these when you have ample sun protection. Finally, vertical stripes are always flattering, and there’s no reason we shouldn’t take advantage of that.
This Year’s Fashion
There were a number of trends that were displayed during fashion week, but only a few are worth mentioning. According to Who What Wear, strings are fashionable this season, especially strings that tie somewhere. “All manner of straps – from waist floss to elongated chokers and ties wrapped on top of garments – were outfit additions we spotted on the runways.” Fringe is back again, and 70’s inspired psychedelic patterns are making a return, but the best trend by far this year for our seniors is anything shiny.1 From a sparkling top to shimmering pants, all the shine is in this season, and our seniors deserve to shine!
Women’s Vogue Bottoms
Now that you know the trendy tops, it’s time to pair them with the perfect bottoms. A shiny or fringy skirt is the perfect way to incorporate this year’s fads into your outfit. If your look is a little more timeless, whether you like it long or short, denim is always fashionable, and blue denim goes especially well with a white shirt. According to Inspired Beauty, “Jean pants are and will always be something we wear no matter the age.”2 Whether you’re 24 or 84, jeans and denim are here to stay. An especially trendy summer look for senior women this year is cuffed jeans. The length of the jeans offers sun protection, but the cuff gives it an adorable, casual, summer look. It’s the same basic principle as capri pants, another typical summer favorite.
Women’s Active Bottoms
Capri pants also have a place this year, being wonderful for an outdoorsy look, but if you’re looking for activewear, then leggings are the way to go. For elderly women who like to stay active, patterned leggings are a favorite, showing off the spring you have in your step. Patterned leggings are great for senior women who want to jazz up their style, but flashy patterns are worn best with neutral shirts to ensure that nothing clashes. Sometimes, a cute pair of leggings is all you need to be inspired to get moving. And what would be more perfect to help you get going than an Alert1 On-the-Go Medical alert? The medical alert necklace goes well with activewear, and knowing you’re protected can help to keep you active and on the move.
Women’s Shoes and Accessories
First and foremost, our ladies should be looking for a comfortable pair of shoes, but this summer, tan sandals are the way to go if you’re trying to stay in fashion. There are many different types of tan sandals, but something in particular to look for are sandals that are connected to the back of your foot. Sandals without a strap in the back have a higher likelihood of falling off. When this happens, they can be a pretty common fall hazard. Wearing shoes that are well-connected to your feet is a good fall prevention strategy, but regardless of your fashionable feet, when it comes to elderly feet, an Alert1 On-the-Go + Fall Detection Medical Alert is the best protection.2 The fall sensor is able to detect when you fall and can call for help even if you are unable to push the button, making it the perfect accessory for strappy sandals.
Men’s Tops
Let’s not forget about our gentlemen! Since it’s unlikely that you’ll be spending your summer shirtless, chances are, you’ll need a stylish top. Luckily, there are many fashionable options.
1. Cotton T-shirts in All Colors
Cotton t-shirts seem to be in everyone’s wardrobe, and since they’re made of light, breathable material, they are a summer staple. However, one thing to keep in mind when wearing a t-shirt is that it should not be tucked into your pants. T-shirts are meant to be casual. If want to tuck in your shirt, consider using a French tuck instead of a full tuck. A French tuck is when you only tuck in the front of your shirt and let the rest hang loose, creating a look that is both flattering and casual.
2. Polos
Polo and golf shirts tend to look good regardless of whether or not they’re tucked in or French tucked. In fact, that’s one of the reasons why they don’t go out of style. While they can be just as comfortable as t-shirts, the collar makes them slightly more formal, and with a nice belt and pants, they can instantly be transformed into the perfect dinner outfit. The versatility of these shirts makes them the perfect addition to any wardrobe.
3. Button Downs
Button downs can be worn tucked, untucked, or even worn open with a t-shirt underneath. Regardless of how you wear it, you want to keep the colors light and bright for the summertime. And while a patterned shirt can be a good way to spice up your look, maybe stay away from Hawaiian shirts. Light and bright is good, but you don’t want a shirt that’s going to overshadow you. If you’re looking for something a little more solid, chambray shirts are great for the heat. According to Azuro-Republic, “People often confuse this material with denim but the weave is different, which makes the chambray much thinner and soft to touch.”5 Light and classy, it’s the perfect shirt for summer.
Men’s Bottoms
Shorts are a great way to beat the heat, and if you like wearing shorts, chino shorts are both tasteful and comfortable, making them great for summer fashion. Chino shorts look the best in neutral colors, which will go well if you follow the aforementioned tip to wear shirts that are light and bright. If you prefer to wear longer pants, khakis are great for the summer. Their light color will help to keep you cool despite their long length, and their length will offer protection from the sun. Alert1 mobile PERS devices come with a belt-clip, so senior gentlemen can easily and comfortably carry their alerts around the house or around the town.
Men’s Shoes and Accessories
No matter what’s in fashion, keeping your feet comfortable is of the utmost importance. With that being said, there’s no reason why you can’t be comfortable and fashionable. If you’re looking for something classy or something that can easily slip on to your feet, penny loafers are a good option. In terms of everyday footwear, elderly gentlemen should be on the lookout for a simple pair of comfy white, tan, or black sneakers. These shoes are both stylish and functional. A good pair of sneakers will provide comfort and support to your feet, making walking an enjoyable activity. With the right pair of sneakers, you could be walking all over town, and there is no better accessory for this than an Alert1 On-the-Go Wrist Watch Medical Alert + GPS + Pedometer.6 This medical alert wrist watch is a very stylish medical alert device, and in addition to being a senior life-saving alert system and telling the date and time, it also comes with a built in GPS, a pedometer, and a weather app, making it the perfect accessory for all of your walks.
Additional Accessories
In addition to Alert1 medical alert pendants and medical alert watches, other functional accessories for the summer include hats and sunglasses. Hats and sunglasses provide protection from the sun, and senior actor Tom Cruise is working hard to make sure those aviator sunglasses never go out of style. And for our ladies, one trend this year that also happens to be a popular trend for senior women is oversized handbags. An oversized handbag paired with a long necklace will leave you looking runway ready in no time.
From all your friends at Alert1, we wish our seniors a happy, stylish summer!
