DIY Holiday Decorations

The most wonderful time of year is here, and it’s time to decorate. Want to make your home a winter wonderland, but don’t know where to begin? Start with snowmen, snowflakes, and joyful holiday colors. Learn how to make these DIY ornaments at home with our helpful guide below.

DIY #1: Flag Banner

triangle flag

If you’re looking for DIY decor that really says something, this project is perfect for you. Although this DIY is great for the holidays, you can change the design to fit any occasion.

Supplies needed:

  1. Colored construction paper
  2. Any kind of string or ribbon
  3. Scissors
  4. Tape or glue

Step 1: Decide what you want your flag banner to say. If you’re short on time, “XMAS” is a good way to go. Got some time on your hands? Go the extra mile and opt to use “Merry Xmas” or “Happy Holidays.”

Step 2: Count the number of letters in the phrase you plan to use for your banner.

Step 3: Cut out triangles from the colored construction paper.  You’ll cut one triangle for each letter in your phrase. (For example, you’ll need 4 triangles for “XMAS”)

Step 4: Glue or tape the colored triangles onto the ribbon or string of your choice.

Step 5: Write your phrase onto the triangles.

Step 6: Tape the banner to any wall or door in your home.

Step 7: (Optional) If you have Christmas lights, drape them over or around the flag banner to make it pop!

Tip: You can use any colored construction paper you like for these banners. However, if you want to be extra festive, opt for red and green. These festive flag banners also make great backgrounds for holiday pictures!

DIY #2: Popsicle Snowflakes

Want to bring snow indoors, but not the cold? Try making your own snowflakes. Popsicle snowflakes are budget friendly and will achieve a winter wonderland look without giving you chills. There’s no right or wrong way to do this DIY – be creative!

Supplies needed:

  1. Popsicle sticks (Purchase at any craft store for less than $5)
  2. Glue
  3. String
  4. (Optional) Paint and glitter

Step 1: Search online or in a magazine for pictures of snowflakes to copy the shape of.

Step 2: Using the pictures you found as reference, align the popsicle sticks to create snowflake shapes.

Step 3: Glue the popsicle sticks in place. You can choose to break some of the popsicle sticks to different lengths to accommodate your design.

Step 4: (Optional) Paint the popsicle sticks in different shades of blue or white. Cover them in glitter for a sparkly touch!

Step 4: Glue string to the top of the snowflakes and let dry.

Step  5: Hang the popsicle snowflakes in your living room, kitchen, or anywhere you want!

Tip: If you don’t have paint or glitter, try decorating the snowflakes with cotton balls. This creates an illusion of snow. The cotton balls will also make the snowflakes look soft and fluffy.
