An emergency response pendant is among the most important purchases a senior can make. A person’s likelihood of experiencing an accident increases as their health deteriorates. Sometimes, this health deterioration isn’t noticeable until you take a fall. As a result, it’s important to set up an emergency response pendant before experiencing an emergency – you don’t know how your body will respond to a fall until it’s too late.
But investing in an alert pendant isn’t always a priority, especially if you’ve never had a severe accident. For this reason, some folks will look for ways to save money on a device. We at Alert1 don’t think anyone should have to compromise to get the medical protection they need. But we recognize that some will feel comfortable sacrificing features to access a lower price point.
This guide is designed to help you figure out when, and if, it’s okay to cut corners. And, if you choose an Alert1 product, know that you’ll never have to compromise.
When is it Okay to Cut Corners?
An emergency response pendant is not a purchase on which you want to compromise. That said, we know that some customers will make a calculated risk to forego some features in favor of a more accessible price point. Below, we’ve listed a few device characteristics you might be comfortable living without.
- Pacemaker Compatibility – Pacemaker compatibility is an absolute necessity for some customers. For others, it’s not something to worry about. If you don’t use a pacemaker or similar device, you don’t have to use a “pacemaker-compatible” device.
- Waterproof Technology – In a perfect world, all emergency response systems would be waterproof. Unfortunately, this feature can mean the difference between a $25/month system and a $50/month system. If you have to forego a waterproof device, it won’t be a huge sacrifice. Rather than wearing the medical alert pendant inside the shower, keep it close by, like on the vanity, by the sink, or somewhere just within reach.
- Unlimited Button Pushes – Some medical alert pendants have a limit on the number of button-pushes a person can make before they incur an extra charge. While not ideal, going above the pre-set number of pushes will only result in an additional cost. You’ll always be patched through to the call center in the case of an emergency, but you’ll end up paying a few extra dollars if you breach the threshold. Some users might be comfortable taking this risk because, in most cases, you won’t need to push the button more than the pre-set allotment.
