Celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Updated 7/30/15 1:59pm | Alert1 admires the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. A beloved Baptist minister and social activist, he rallied to unify the peoples of our nation. His name became synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States because of the influential speaking, writing, and peaceful protesting he did in the mid-1950’s. Dr. King is well known for the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, and his “I Have a Dream” address. At the age of 35, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In spite of being subjected to personal abuse and violence, Martin Luther King, Jr. persevered; he not only became the symbolic leader of American blacks, but he became a world figure. His life was tragically cut short in 1968, when he was assassinated on the balcony of his hotel room.

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached about justice, empowerment, love, and peace. In the final months of his life, he turned his attention to fighting poverty. Dr. King once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’” It is appropriate that we now celebrate his legacy with a day of community service. This year, theMartin Luther King, Jr. Day of Servicewas held on Monday, January 21st. It is the only federal holiday observed as a national day of service – “a day on, not off.” Americans of every age and background are encouraged to come together and strengthen their communities.

At Alert1 medical alert systems, we believe it is important to build goodwill in the community. We began as a small, family-owned business and one of the ways we do that is by treating our customers like family. Every employee from our sales reps, to our billing department, to our technical support team is taught to respect and value each customer. Another way we build goodwill is by partnering with other like-minded organizations to give back to the community. We partner with HOPE Enterprises to employ people with special needs to clean, refurbish, repair and test our devices. We also run special promotions throughout the year, which feature donations to relevant causes such as diabetes and breast cancer awareness.
