Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

by Shayne Fitz-Coy

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a beloved Baptist minister and social activist. His name became synonymous with the Civil Rights Movement in the United States because of the influential speaking, writing, and peaceful protesting he did in the mid-1950’s. Dr. King is well known for the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycott, his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”, and his “I Have a Dream” address. At the age of 35, he was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. In spite of being subjected to personal abuse and violence, Martin Luther King, Jr. persevered; he not only became the symbolic leader of American blacks, but he became a world figure.
