6 Holiday Gifts Your Grandparents Will Love

Updated 8/17/14 9:11am | Holidays are a stressful time for everyone, and Alert1 can understand why! There’s a lot of pressure to find the perfect present, create an awesome menu, and decorate to perfection. While we get wrapped up in fighting crowds at the mall and tightly managing our budget, our grandparents simply look forward to seeing us. Many seniors look forward to the holidays all year long, when they are reunited with their grandchildren and can spend time with their loved ones. While home for the holidays, caregivers need to keep watch for aging loved ones warning signs

This year, take it one step further and give your grandparents unique and meaningful gifts they won't return! At their age, they don’t care about having a present that is worth a lot of money. They want a present that had some thought put into it. Gifts don’t have to be expensive to be rich in value. Amidst the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, take some time to create a gift your grandparents will never forget.

6 ways to create the perfect present

These gifts are not only cost effective, but super thoughtful as well. Your grandparents will love them!

  1. A photo of you

This is the perfect time to dig out your old photos and take a trip down memory lane. There are few things that a grandparent loves more than a photo of them and their grandchild that they can show all of their friends. Bonus points if you decorate the frame!
  2.
  3. Baked goods

Honestly, it doesn’t even have to taste good…your grandma and grandpa will love that you tried! Some favorites include pumpkin bread, snickerdoodles, and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting… yum!
  4.
  5. A handwritten card

The holiday season is the perfect time of year to tell someone how much you appreciate them. Your grandparents hold a special place in your heart, but have you told them lately? Chances are you’ll bring a tear to Grandma’s eye when you tell her how very special she is to you.
  6.
  7. A surprise visit!

Travel around the holidays is always a bit of a struggle, which makes your presence even more valuable. This is a wonderful time of the year to put down your work and reconnect with your loved ones. We often underestimate just how much our grandparents love to squeeze our cheeks and give us a great big bear hug!
  8.
  9. Arts and crafts

Remember those scribbles you made in kindergarten that Grandma convinced you were better than the Mona Lisa? She loved them then and she will love them now. Create an original art piece just for her. It could be a painting, a drawing, a story… the possibilities are endless!
  10.
  11. A medical alert system

Use your charm to teach your grandparents about the benefits of a senior medical alert system.  Your grandparents love you and don’t want you to worry about them. A medical alert system will bring the whole family peace of mind knowing that your grandparents are protected 24/7. Let Alert1 protect them so you can enjoy spending time with your family without worry.

The key characteristics of a sentimental present

  1. You’ve spent more time on the gift than money

Seniors, more than anyone, appreciate the value of time. While grandma would love the new iPhone 6+, it surely won’t mean as much to her as something you’ve really put thought into.
  2.
  3. It comes from your heart

You know your grandparents better than anyone, so create something you know they will enjoy. If your grandma collects potholders, head to your nearest craft store and pick up the supplies to make a special one. If your grandpa loves your banana bread recipe, bring over a special loaf just for him.
  4.
  5. You’ve personalized it for them

Make it special. Does your grandma like bling? Pick out one of Alert1’s fashionable lanyards for her medical alert pendant! The extra personal touch will make it even more meaningful.
  6.
  7. It represents a memory

Think of your favorite childhood memory with your grandparents, and find a way to adapt that into a gift. Surely your grandparents will remember it too, and you can take the time to recount all of those precious memories together!

When putting together gifts for your grandparents, take the time to make it something extraordinary. Remember, they don’t care about imperfections. They don’t care whether or not you burnt your signature pie, or the fact that you spelled “Christmas” wrong. They will care that you took time out of your busy holiday season to ensure that they had a spectacular one.

Be warned, you may want to bring tissues - these gifts will absolutely inspire tears. Take advantage of the time you have together during this holiday season to get an extra hug, share an incredible story, and truly enjoy the time spent with your loved ones.

These are all great ideas for grandparents! It's hard to purchase something for them especially my grandparents whom always say "Save your money." Creating something for them and visiting them is such a rewarding gift that they will truly appreciate.

Great article. Make it about the thought and not the money - always a great tip.

Visiting your grandparents and spending time with them could be the most rewarding present, especially if you don't get to visit too often.
