Failure to take medication properly can be dangerous.
According to the American Medical Association:
- Over 60% of the medication prescribed in the United States is not taken as directed
- 25% of all hospital and nursing home admissions each year of people aged 65 year or older are due to their failure to take their prescription medications as directed
- Failure to take prescribed medication properly is the number one reason for hospital re-admissions.

Medication Questions to Ask Your Doctor About Your Medications
- What is the name of the medication?
- Why am I taking it?
- Is there a generic equivalent?
- How much should I take?
- How long should I take it for?
- What should I do if I miss a dose?
- Should I take it on an empty stomach or with food?
- Where should I store the it?
- Will I need to refill the prescription?
- Will this medicine interfere with others I am taking?
- Are there any foods, beverages, other medications, or activities I should avoid?
If you forget the answer to any of these questions, always call your doctor. You may wish to make a list of the medications you take and the answers to the questions above. You can use the examples provided below as a guide.
